Designed in conjunction with Ennead Architects, the 21-story Kimmel Pavilion features 374 single-patient rooms, the city’s newest children’s hospital, 30 state-of-the-art ORs and full integration into the existing Tisch Hospital building. NBBJ planned, programmed and designed all clinical spaces.
The inpatient floors are designed for maximum efficiency and comfort for patients, families and staff, with windows in corridors bringing daylight deep into the center of the building. To further the teaching mission of this academic medical center, staff lounges and huddle spaces are distributed throughout the floors so clinicians and students can discuss cases in private.
Each of the 374 inpatient rooms are single-occupancy to increase privacy, reduce the risk of infection, and improve staff workflow. With floor-to-ceiling windows, each room enjoys expansive views of the city. Angled corridors additionally create a functional zone outside each room where clinical staff can restock supplies and medication without disturbing the patient.
The Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital functions as a hospital within a hospital. Dedicated paths of travel and spaces include a separate entry lobby and elevators, with 68 patient rooms, separate procedural check-in and waiting areas, play spaces and an abundance of child-friendly art. Amongst the Kimmel Pavilion’s amenities are a café, coffee bar, conference center and landscaped outdoor terraces that allow all patients, visitors and staff to enjoy fresh air and views across the East River and New York City.
